Discover how the unique qualities of the gel plate can transform simple layers of paint into stunning, atmospheric landscapes. In this hands-on workshop, students will explore techniques that are unique to gel printing, creating dreamy scenes with depth, texture, and luminous color that are difficult—if not impossible—to achieve with traditional painting methods. Participants will learn how to build landscapes through transparent layers, soft blends, and subtle textures while experimenting with color, composition, and mark-making. The forgiving nature of the gel plate encourages experimentation, making it easy to embrace happy accidents that often lead to the most beautiful results. Students will complete several practice prints before creating one or more finished ethereal landscapes that reflect their own artistic style. You will finish with unique prints, a deeper understanding of layering and color, and the confidence to continue exploring this captivating printing process at home. This workshop is best suited for students who have some previous experience with gel printing. A basic familiarity with the gel plate will allow participants to focus on developing more expressive techniques and creating rich, ethereal landscapes.

Kathie Scrimgeour

Kathie Scrimgeour is a multidisciplinary artist and creator with an emphasis on visual art. Her work–rich in textures, layers, and vibrant colors–draws on a lifetime of experience in painting, drawing, photography, jewelry, textiles, and more. Her distinctive gel monotypes are one-of-a-kind acrylic print paintings created in her home studio at the foot of the Catalina mountains. Working in an arid climate and specializing in a fast drying medium makes her work, by necessity, as spontaneous as it is intentionally planned.
