Come learn to create a patchwork pendant using bronze metal clay. Students will choose from a variety of textural elements to create a unique jewelry collage. From simple designs to complex patterns, these pendants will engage your creative energy and delight your creative spirit. Demonstration and instruction include how to work with, refine, fire, and finish metal clay creations. Instruction also includes how to make silicone molds of textural items for repetitive use. Due to the long firing process of bronze clay pieces will be fired outside of class time and mailed or delivered back to the Art Center. Metal clay is composed of microscopic particles of a metal (silver, bronze, copper, or steel) combined with an organic binder to produce a clay-like substance. When fired at high temperatures, the binder burns off and the metal particles fuse into a solid piece of metal.

Instructor Bio

Lyle Rayfield

Lyle Rayfield is an award-winning metal clay artist and Master Instructor for Art Clay World USA, as well as an Accredited Teacher for Hadar’s ClayTM and a PMC Certified Artisan. After many years of various jewelry ventures, Lyle discovered the world of metal clay and expanded her love of teaching into the metal clay community. She is a studio jewelry artist and currently offers classes on a regular basis at her home in Tucson, AZ, as well as through neighboring arts education venues. Lyle’s work was honored at the 2006 and 2008 Art Clay World North American Design Competitions. You can find her work exhibited for sale in several local galleries, including Desert Artisans, Tubac Center of the Arts, Tucson Desert Art Museum, and Tohono Chul.

I took my very first metal clay class with Lyle in 2004 and because of that class I continued on and got my Level One Art Clay Instructor Certification under Lyle's guidance. From the beginning, Lyle was informative and patient, so that even someone with like me, who had never worked with metal clay, was able to follow her instructions and have the confidence to finish the project and want to learn more.
