The Rock/Paper/Scissors workshop is an immersive mixed-media experience designed for artists interested in expanding their work through process, scale, layering, and abstraction. Developed by artist Peter Anderson, the workshop combines monoprinting, collage, drawing, and improvisational composition into a dynamic studio practice that encourages experimentation and discovery rather than predetermined outcomes. The title refers to the three core elements of the process: “Rock” represents graphite, charcoal, and drawing materials; “Paper” refers to the large monoprints created during the workshop; and “Scissors” reflects the tearing, cutting, and reconstruction that transforms the prints into finished works. Participants work with large prepared plates—some as large as 48” x 60”—that are coated with textured surfaces and activated with water-soluble graphite and pigment. Through hand-burnishing, pressure, and gesture, richly layered monoprints emerge with unexpected textures and marks. On the first day, participants collaboratively create a series of large monoprints using rollers, hands, brushes, graphite, and water-based materials. Emphasis is placed on rhythm, layering, intuition, and responsiveness to the evolving surface. The prints are then left to dry overnight. The second day shifts into construction and composition. Participants select from the printed materials and begin tearing, cutting, layering, and collaging onto panels or canvas. Additional drawing and surface work help unify the compositions and develop visual structure. The process allows representational artists to move toward abstraction while giving abstract artists new ways to think about scale, surface, and improvisation. Influenced by jazz, Japanese calligraphy, Rauschenberg’s combines, and the idea that “all art aspires to the condition of music,” the workshop emphasizes emergence, risk, and discovery. Rather than teaching a formula or style, Rock/Paper/Scissors provides a flexible framework that encourages each artist’s individual voice to surface through process and experimentation.

Peter Anderson

Born in Roswell, New Mexico in 1950. Peter grew up there and in Colorado. He attended the University of Denver and University of Stockholm to receive a BA in English Literature. He taught English in Japan for 3 years (1973-1976). Peter Anderson is a newly Arizona-based mixed-media artist whose work explores rhythm, memory, and abstraction through layered collage, monoprint, and drawing processes. Peternfluenced by music, jazz, and Japanese aesthetics, his work translates improvisation and gesture into large-scale visual compositions.

Peter’s 2-day workshop was educational, inspirational, and really fun. I appreciated Peter being organized to ensure the class was well paced and allowed as much hands-on time as possible. The principles that Peter shared at the start of the class enabled a real freedom to explore and experiment over the 2 days. Peter taught us his unique approach to collage then coached and encouraged us as we worked individually and collaboratively to create our collages. Peter has an easy-going style, he enthusiastically shares his passion for learning and art making, and it’s obvious that he enjoys teaching. I’d definitely take another class with Peter.

Peter is very generous in the use of his materials and the materials reflected in the supplies in the students fees. He seamlessly interjects the work of artists that is relevant. His feedback at this and every subsequent stage is supportive. Printing in the afternoon was again a joint eﬀort. This was wonderful because one is not burdened by doing it right but focused on experimenting. Ownership of product was less important than developing process! Peter, worked with individuals on the principles that make for a good composition and ways to embellish with other tools.

Peter's class is immersive into personal creativity. Allowing yourself to relinquish preconceived goals and savor the process was the key for me. We chose and layered the papers with medium, creating a magical storytelling with color and forms that spontaneously happened! Peter is a master teacher, though he calls himself a guide in the process. He is so generous and supportive with his knowledge, including both failures and successes, in using these mediums. He holds nothing back as he gently supported my personal process and outcomes. I highly recommend engaging in this highly creative process. It validates how transformative art can be!
