During the painting process, artists spend much of their time trying to mix the correct colors and values. Colors are rarely used straight “out of the tube,” and learning how to adjust value, hue, and saturation is essential for achieving accuracy and harmony in your artwork. In this class, we will focus on the foundations of color: how light and shadow affect color, understanding color temperature, creating harmony, and using context to make colors feel believable and alive within a painting. You will learn practical techniques for achieving accurate color and value relationships in any subject matter, with special attention given to strengthening the focal point of your painting. The goal of this workshop is to give you the tools to create paintings that are more engaging, vibrant, appealing, and convincingly three-dimensional. Through demonstrations, individual guidance, and hands-on practice, students will gain a clearer understanding of how color works and how to use it with confidence. Suitable for beginners through advanced painters. All media are welcome.

Drawing and painting since childhood, she developed a lifelong passion for portraiture—both people and animals—and is especially drawn to light and dramatic contrast in her work. She has taught art for over 17 years and currently offers private classes and workshops at the Cactus Wren Art Gallery, the Tubac School of Fine Art, the Quail Creek Fine Arts club, and the Community Performance and Arts Center in Arizona. Her work has been exhibited at several venues, including the Phippen Art Museum, Tubac Center of the Arts, and The Cactus Wren Art Gallery. Sonsoles is an award-winning artist that studied at the University of Maryland, Montpelier Arts Center, and Scottsdale Artists School, and got further training with notable artists such as Chris Saper, Ray Roberts, James Coulter, Robert Goldman and Phil Beck.

"Sunny is a gifted teacher with a warm, encouraging presence that instantly puts students at ease. She meets each person where they are, offering clear guidance, constant support, and genuine kindness. Her energy fills the room, and her passion for both art and teaching is contagious. I learned more in one week with her than I ever had before—and even gained a friend. Tubac is truly lucky to have such a talented artist and remarkable instructor." - M.B.
